In 2012, I started a Photo-A-Day project on another photo site called Pbase. The first attempt I only managed to have a 101 photos, nothing near the 365 that were “required”. I decided that I would try again in 2012 and I was able to snap 365 images!! Now, 2012 was a leap year, so I did miss one day, but c’mon….365 was pretty damn good in my mind. I skipped attempting another one in 2013 for many reasons, mainly because there were some days when I would stress over not having a photo taken only to whip out some half-assed iphone image and call it done. I felt that by taking crappy pictures of anything in front of me was merely cheating and that I might as well not have taken any. So this years is coming to an abrupt end. I have thought about this and I think I will attempt another PaD, or”Photo a Day”, or 365, etc, etc. But I want to challenge myself. I know, I know, “but I felt pressured during the last one…”, why the hell would I want to add more stress? Well, maybe giving myself some challenges, barriers, etc might assist me with becoming lazy with this. I am not a professional photographer, nor do I have any “professional” lenses or camera bodies. What I have decided to do, initially, is to force the use of each of the 7 lenses I own. This will mean that I must take at least 52 shots with each lens. I am not sure if I should do this in any order, or just keep track of how many photos I make with each lens. It seems that it would be easiest to start with one lens and use it each day until the quota is met. Also, if by some act of photographic miracle I obtain a new lens, then I’l decide if I can incorporate that into the mix. The 7 lenses I own, in no specific order; Nikon 50mm F/1.4G, Nikon 85mm F/1.8G, Tamron 70-200mm F/2.8, Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Tamron 180mm F/3.5 Macro and a Pro-Optic 8mm Fisheye. So, to say that using a couple of these lenses for 52 straight days is going to be tough, is an understatement. I might just start with the worst of the bunch, the 8mm Fisheye, and see how many days I can manage just to determine if I will be going straight through 52 days, or just keeping a tally of the number of shots. Maybe an excel spreadsheet is in order for this project, huh?
I’ve spent too much time watching videos of DIY projects, lighting tips and “how to’s”, creativity boosters, reading books, ebooks, etc. All the while hearing every photographer in the land of Youtube say “shoot, shoot, shoot!” That is the only way to get better! I’ve more than enough equipment for a small photo studio, strobist shoot, etc. Time to put it to use. I figure that I’ll have with me only the lens to be used (ok, maybe cheat and keep the 50mm nearby), a small strobist survival kit (I’ll keep a log of gear used, maybe even a “how I did it” briefing).
So, if anyone actually reads to the end, please feel free to offer up any tips, ideas, inspiration, etc. I promise to listen. After all, what’s the worst I can do, tell you where to put your ideas…? Maybe.
Oh, here is a link to my completed (minus on leap year day) PaD
